How often do you think about your lymphatic system? Chances are, unless your lymphatic system has been affected in some way due to congenital conformation, infection, or surgery, your answer is probably something along the lines of “hardly ever,” “I know what a lymph node is,” or “my what?”
The lymphatic system, which is part of the circulatory system, is one of the most under-rated and under-appreciated systems in the body. It’s the body’s “cleaning system.” It helps the body clear out metabolic cell waste in an effort to maintain a fluid homeostasis.
After our cells consume nutrients, they secrete waste (aka “cell poop”) or even die and fragment and are ready for disposal. That waste, in addition to excess fluids, proteins in our tissues, and any other cell products that would otherwise result in disease or disorder, needs to be removed - that’s the job of our lymphatic system!
When we clear out the waste and maintain optimal fluid levels in our tissues, our bodies are able to provide nutrients and appropriate immune responses at optimal levels. But sometimes that waste gets stuck in the body and stagnates, which can lead to toxin buildup and weaken our immunity. It can make us feel sluggish, heavy, or lead to a variety of health issues. To get the lymph flowing again, we need an assist.
That’s where Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) comes in. The lymphatic system doesn’t have it’s own pump (it relies on our muscles to help move it along, which is why exercise is great for the lymphatic system!) so the therapist’s hands help stimulate the desired lymphatic movement. MLD encourages the lymph to flow and helps clear out the unwanted waste - making us feel lighter and healthier. An added benefit of MLD is its slow, rhythmical cadence, which stimulates the “rest and digest” part of your nervous system - offering pain relieving effects and overall relaxation.
