Why Try Manual Lymph Drainage?
The lymphatic system is a crucial part of the immune system, responsible for keeping our body’s systems working properly, efficiently, and optimally. It influences all aspects of our health. Slow or stagnant lymph flow is correlated with higher risk of disease and disfunction.
Improving your lymph flow helps to quiet chronic inflammation, which lies at the heart of many conditions associated with aging, low energy, and overall dysfunction.
Research is beginning to show that a healthy lymphatic system has a role in preventing heart disease, brain problems, gastrointestinal issues, and more.
What is Manual Lymph Drainage?
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a light skin-stretching technique that should not be confused with traditional massage. Traditional massage manipulates muscle tissue, while lymphatic drainage stimulates superficial lymph structures in the skin. MLD aids the flow of lymph through the body’s lymphatic vessels, including lymph nodes.
With MLD, work will first be conducted in unaffected areas to “decongest” the body. That creates a suction or vacuum effect that helps to draw out stagnant lymph fluid and get it moving again. That lymph fluid can then be returned to the blood circulation system and properly eliminated from the body.
The slow, rhythmic contractions of MLD augment the flow of lymph, while the light skin stretch ensures that the superficial lymph vessels in the skin can operate at their best. The rhythmic nature of the manual strokes offers wonderful analgesic (pain relieving) benefits and can lull you into great relaxation!
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Like many complicated things in life, the answer is “it depends.”
We recommend receiving services monthly for general health and wellness. However, if you’re experiencing swelling, increased frequency is required.
Pre- and post-op clients’ scheduling requirements will depend on many factors related to their procedure.
Contact us to discuss your scheduling needs.
-
Typical massage such as Swedish or deep tissue is performed through a variety of techniques such as kneading, gliding, and rolling with pressure deep enough to stimulate and relax your body’s muscles.
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) stimulates your body’s superficial lymphatic structures and lymph nodes, which requires a slow, rhythmic, skin-stretching technique that will not affect the muscles.
-
Most massage therapists who offer MLD do so for health and wellness purposes. They have basic training and knowledge of the lymphatic system and their services are designed for people with healthy lymphatic systems.
Our services differ in that we have hundreds of hours of training on the lymphatic system, manual lymphatic drainage, and the Vodder technique - an evidence-based form of MLD with proven results. We are trained to work on post-surgical clients as well as those with compromised lymphatic systems. We want to be your partner in healing!
-
MLD stimulates the lymphatic system, which is responsible for fluid volume in the body.
You may experience an increased need to urinate after this work. Abdominal techniques, if performed, stimulate peristalsis, which may also increase your trips to the bathroom for elimination.
You may feel achy as your body detoxifies, but this is temporary.
Drinking plenty of water before and after treatment and staying active can decrease any achy feelings.

We know life can get hectic, and scheduling conflicts are bound to occasionally happen.
Please call, text or email if you are unable to keep your appointment. This allows our other clients to book with us, and we often have a waiting list.
We will do our best to work with you, but cancellations need to be made within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment to avoid being charged 50% of the treatment fee.
No-call and no-show appointments will be charged the full treatment fee. This amount should be paid prior to your next scheduled appointment.
We value our clients and therapists time, which is why communication is key.
